About the Festival

The Bakersfield International Music Festival is a ten-day afternoon solo and chamber music program for students studying violin, viola, cello, double bass, and piano. The program runs daily from 1:00 to 5:00 PM, with concerts held at 5:00 PM on select days. We welcome participants entering 7th grade and beyond, from developing young musicians to experienced and dedicated players. The festival takes place at California State University, Bakersfield.

What we offer

  • Individual Lessons: Two private lessons with BIMF faculty
  • Chamber Music Coaching: Daily chamber music coaching sessions with BIMF faculty
  • Lectures: Guest lecturers present sessions on a variety of topics.
  • Studio Classes: Instrument-based studio classes for all participants
  • Master Classes: Selected individuals and ensembles perform in master classes.
  • Competitions: BIMF hosts the Young Artist Competition and the Concerto Competition. Winners are featured in the BIMF Showcase Concert, and the First Prize winner of the Concerto Competition performs with the Tehachapi Symphony Orchestra.
  • Concerts: BIMF presents several concerts, including the Faculty Concert, Showcase Concert, Young Artist Concert, and Gala Concert. The festival culminates in the Gala Concert, featuring all participants.

Academic Credit

BIMF offers one unit of optional college credit for an additional fee. Please contact us for further information.

American Language Institute (ALI)

At American Language Institute (ALI) at California State University, Bakersfield, we offer a special two-week language training for Bakersfield International Music Festival participants.  Students will practice listening and speaking English in a classroom with American teachers.  Classes will cover everyday conversation topics as well as basic academic topics such as technology, psychology and science.
